Sniper ballistics calculator for the military? There’s an App for that!

Apparently now the US military are going mad over deployment of iPod Touch devices with specially developed apps aimed at helping soldiers out in the field.

Apps perform a varying range of services and operations from language translation, sharing data among soldiers and divisions, sniper ballistic calculations and map/location services.

Vcommunicator translates spoken and written Arabic, Kurdish, as well as two Afghan languages. Another application developed for the iPod Touch would allow a soldier to take a picture of a street sign, upload it and receive intelligence on the local area.

Training soldiers on the device should be a relative no brainer as most of today’s youth (most likely to join the army) are familiar with how iPhones work and the inherent relative simplicity of the iOS system should mean a very forgiving learning curve.

A spokesperson for the military gave the following example – “Consider the impact of showing villagers a video message of a relaxed local leader encouraging them to help root out insurgents”.

Some technology companies are criticising the move as this is basically making Apple a main distributor to the US Military. Also due to well know multi-tasking and background workings of the iOS, critics are questioning why other operating systems such as Android or Windows Mobile aren’t being considered.

Personally I think it’s a good idea. PDAs and smart handheld devices have been in usage by the military for quite a while, however the next generation of smart devices (iPods, Android devices, etc) will simply bring it into the new age.
